Whenever I have the opportunity to take young people on the trails, I choose the Rochford area. Here is an area filled with mining and railroad history that in some places is still quite evident. Look for an old restored church. Look for evidence of mining and old cabins.
Three hidden graves, now marked, tell the fate of a family tragedy.
In 1938, new development work was done on the Yellow Bird Mine, and a 50-ton flotation mill was built to mill oxidized ore. Part of the structure still stands within sight of the trail.
Other standing buildings include; the George Frink Cabin, the Long Draw Cabins, Lookout Mill, Meyerville cabin, Mccahan Chapel, Mystic Cabin, Rochford Chapel and Rochford Cabins. There is even an old waterwheel in the area.
The Camp F-1 CCC camp was located here.
Other evidence of mining history include; Yellowbird Mine, Divide Lode mine and the George Frink mine.
Castle Creek is a beautiful feature of the area and Rapid Creek falls is a great place to stop for a picnic.
Evidence of a historic railroad exists at Tunnel A, B, C, and D. Hike to these if you have time.
Ghost towns in the area include; Alta Ghost Town, Canyon City Ghost Town, Fair View Ghost Town, Mystic Ghost Town, Ochre City Ghost Town, Rochford Ghost Town, Meyerville Ghost Town and Castletown Ghost Town.
Many waterfalls include; Mystic waterfall, Tunnel waterfall and the splendid Rapid Creek Falls.
The Bell Park Cemetery provides some glimpses into history.
Some natural features to watch for are the SD Rain Forest, and Castle Peak.
If you are in to hiking, the Daugherty Gold Trailhead for Trail #40 is found here.
